Mount Hood Skiing – One of the Best Things to do in Oregon

Mount Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon. Situated in the northern part of the state about 65 miles to the east of the city of Portland, Mount Hood’s snow laden peak is more than 11, 000 feet high. Mount Hood is actually a volcano classified as dormant.

Skiers can look forward to excellent Mount Hood skiing experience with the area offering 65 runs, 8 lifts and a little over 2,000 acres of ski terrain with a vertical rise of 2,777 ft and more than 400 inches of snow every year. Half of the trails are fit for intermediate skiers and the remaining 20 percent is suited for advanced skiers. Mount Hood skiing season is from the middle of November through May.

Established in the late 1920’s, the Cascade Ski Club is behind the development of Mount Hood as a preferred winter sports destination. Their lodge is presently located on the Government Camp in Mount Hood. Members of the Cascade Ski Club enjoy discounts on lodging, meals and parking plus making reservations are no longer necessary.
For those interested in Mount Hood skiing, there are six skiing areas to choose from including Mt. Hood Meadows, Ski Bowl, Snow Bunny, Cooper Spur, Summit and Timberline. Mount Hood skiing is one of the best in the state of Oregon because of the excellent snow conditions on the mountain and the presence of first-rate ski resorts and ski camps.

Cooper Spur, which is a 90-minute ride from Portland, is a mountain resort great for family and group vacations and affairs. Its ski area also has a ski school and tubing center. Snow Bunny is a small skiing area ideal for kids and families. The Timberline offers the only year round skiing with ski lift service in the United States. It also has a camp for ski racing.

The Summit is the oldest skiing area in the Pacific Northwest and the Ski Bowl is the largest facility in the United States that offers night skiing. Head to Mt. Hood Meadows skiing area to experience the driest snow you will find in the Northwest as well as the most diverse skiing trails on Mount Hood.
